Essential Care Tips for Sterling Silver Jewellery

There’s something truly timeless about Sterling Silver jewellery; its shine and the way it complements any outfit make it the preferred precious metal for many of us. But if you want your pieces stay looking their best, a little care goes a long way. Over time, Sterling Silver can tarnish or lose its sparkle, and that’s perfectly normal. The good news is, with some simple steps, you can keep your jewellery looking clean and beautiful for years to come.

Why Care Tips for Sterling Silver Matter

Sterling silver is an alloy made of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, typically copper. This mix gives it strength to the alloy, but also makes it prone to tarnishing. Tarnish happens when silver reacts with sulphur or oxygen in the air, turning it dull or black. It’s not damage, just a natural process. But if you don’t clean it regularly, the tarnish can build up and become harder to remove.

Taking care of your Sterling Silver jewellery means you’re protecting your investment. Whether it’s a delicate necklace, a bold ring, or a pair of handcrafted earrings, keeping them clean and protected from tarnish helps ensure they stay stunning. Plus, regular care helps preserve the craftsmanship and detail that make each piece unique.

Simple Care Tips for Sterling Silver

Here are some easy, practical tips I suggest to my customers for keeping Sterling Silver jewellery clean and tarnish free:

  • Store it properly: Always keep your silver jewellery in a cool, dry place. You can use use anti-tarnish pouches or cloth bags if you wish. Just try to avoid leaving pieces out in the open where they can be exposed to air and moisture.

  • Avoid chemicals: Perhaps the most important tip. Perfumes, lotions, hairspray, and cleaning products can speed up tarnishing. I strongly recommend applying make-up and cosmetics before putting on your jewellery, and always remove jewellery before cleaning! Chemicals can be very harsh on Sterling Silver, in particular products containing bleach or ammonia, which can rapidly tarnish the metal. This is also important for any stones or resin that may be porous. The best practice is to remove jewellery before you handle any chemical - and that includes doing the washing up and bathing too! I know we all tend to have pieces we like to wear continually, but really, the best practice for keeping those most loved items cared for is to remove them while you wash.

  • Wear it often: One of the best methods for preventing tarnish. Have you ever noticed that the Sterling Silver jewellery you wear most frequently appears to never tarnish? That's because the natural oils from your skin help to keep it polished. Wearing your favourite items on rotation is one of the best ways to keep tarnish at bay.

  • Clean gently: Sterling Silver can be gently cleaned using warm water in a mild detergent. If choosing this method, I recommend allowing the jewellery to soak first, before carefully brushing with a soft toothbrush to remove dirt and grime.

Silver polishing cloths are a great, gently way to remove a light build up of oils and dirt. Regular cleaning in this way will help to prevent tarnish. Simply wipe your jewellery after wearing it, and store it in a cool, dry place.

Handling Tarnish and Stubborn Stains

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, tarnish can get stubborn. When that happens, don’t panic. There are safe ways to bring back the shine without damaging your jewellery.

  • Anti-tarnish Polishing Cloths: I provide an anti-tarnish silver polishing cloth in all my orders. These soft, silver polishing cloths remove oils and dirt to help prevent tarnish. They are also brilliant for removing tarnish, making Sterling Silver shine like new again. There are many brands of cloth on the market, however I highly recommend Town Talk.

  • It's important to bear in mind that some jewellery will have oxidisation use as a decorative feature. Those blackened areas that enhance the beauty on your favourite pendant? That is created by oxidising the Sterling Silver. If you want to keep those details strong, it's important to remove the tarnish in a controlled way. That's one reason I favour polishing cloths over silver dip.

  • Avoid harsh chemicals: Never use bleach or ammonia on your silver. These can cause permanent damage. I avoid using silver dip products due to the chemicals, especially if your jewellery has gemstones or delicate details. Some cleaning chemicals may harm stones or finishes.

  • When in doubt, consult a professional jeweller.

Storing Your Sterling Silver Jewellery Safely

Proper storage is key to preventing tarnish and damage. I keep my pieces separated to avoid scratches and tangling. Here’s how I organise my collection:

  • Individual pouches or compartments: Use soft cloth pouches or jewellery boxes with separate sections.

  • Anti-tarnish strips or bags: These help absorb moisture and slow down tarnishing.

  • Avoid plastic bags: Some plastics can trap moisture and cause tarnish faster.

  • Keep away from sunlight and humidity: Store jewellery in a cool, dry place, away from windows or bathrooms.

Taking a few minutes to store your jewellery properly after wearing it can save you time and effort later.
